‘Diary’ is a highly personal and experimental film that expresses the subjective experience of my work, and was made as an attempt to locate myself after ten years of reporting. Tim Hetherington, photojournalist, filmmaker, was killed April, the 20th, 2011, while covering the conflict in Misrata, Libya and making this “highly personal and experimental film” his last.

Ce « Journal » montre le côté subjectif du travail de journaliste de guerre et de grand reporter. Tim Hetherington a été tué le 20 avril 2011 alors qu’il couvrait le conflit à Misrata en Libye. An experimental film in tribute to Ridley Scott’s legendary film “Blade Runner” (1982)
This film was made as a unique picture with a resolution of 60.000 x 60.000 pixels (3.6 gigapixels)
It was made with 167,819 frames from ‘Blade Runner’.
1>first step : the « picture » of the film
I extracted the 167,819 frames from ‘Blade Runner’ (final cut version,1h51mn52s19i)
then I assembled all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels (3500 million pixels)
2> second step : an illusion
I placed a virtual camera above this big picture. So what you see is like an illusion, because contrary to appearances there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image which creates the animated film, like a film in front of a projector.

Film expérimental en hommage au film « Blade Runner » de Ridley Scott.
1> dans un premier temps j’ai fabriqué l’IMAGE du film! (ce travail initial date de 2004)
Blade Runner dans sa version final cut ayant une durée de 1h51mn52s19i, j’en ai extrait les 167 819 frames.
J’ai ensuite assemblé toutes ces images. Je les ai « collées » les unes aux autres pour au final n’en constituer qu’une seule aux dimensions titanesques: un carré d’environ 60 000 pixels de côté soit 3,5 gigapixels (3500 million de pixels).
2>une illusion.
pour la seconde phase, j’ai du attendre de disposer d’un ordinateur assez puissant pour pouvoir manipuler une image aussi immense à l’intérieur de mon compositing.
ce film est expérimental car il donne l’impression de parcourir une multitude d’images animées, alors qu’il ne s’agit en fait que d’une illusion.
Car contrairement aux apparences il n’y a qu’une seule image. c’est en fait le mouvement relatif de la caméra virtuelle, survolant cette image qui fait s’animer le film, comme le fait la pellicule déroulant au travers du projecteur.
Ecological apple (experimental short) from Andreas Soderberg. This video just show an apple breathing slowly. I didn’t know in which category to put it. Is this art ? It is a video but it is strange too… The apple has been filmed in stop motion during its rotting process, and this is what we can see on its film. The footage has been remixed to give the illusion it is breathing out its life and juice, while it can breath in its life. Neat.
